Why don’t you bill by the waterline instead of the overall boat?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The old adage is that when you are bragging about your boat to your girlfriend you include the bow sprit, the anchor and the dinghy hanging off the back, but when you are questioning a marina or yard bill, the waterline is the only thing that matters.

Afterall, the waterline length is the only thing that is getting painted or utilizing space right? Wrong, the boat occupies a lot of space in or out of the water and if we only charged for WL I would pity the modern plumb bow owners and envy the Hans Christian owners of the world. Speaking of the HC’s, I would bet that half of their overall length is sprits and wing dings.

Anyways, please be kind to your resident marina operators and yards as they are not their to screw you, they are there to provide you with access to the sea. Someone has to do it. Happy Sailing.

The Barber Shop Theory

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Tuesdays are usually the best days of the work week due to the basic normal reasons: the trials of a long weekend have been “worked off” or more importantly, the prior week of toil has been forgotten and the ensuing week is still new. Plenty of time to complete projects promised, solve problems yet unsolved etc etc. The sky is truly the limit, at least for now. Our Ventura facility is emptying out and our rag tag crew has moved to Channel Islands. I have a theory regarding the yards I like to call the “Barber Shop Theory” What the theory satisfies is the simple observation that when we are empty, the phone rings a lot. “Do you guys have any specials?” I liken this event to a similar experience I have when I need a hair cut. I drive by Jerry’s(my barber) store and if the place is empty, I stop and get my hair cut. If it is full, I drive right by. So all that said, I bet our phone in Ventura starts ringing today.
